Historic Waxhaw cotton mill gets new life

The old Rodman-Heath Cotton Mill on East Main Street in downtown Waxhaw is getting a new lease on life with plans for more than 60 apartments and commercial space as part of a project dubbed The Mill on Main.

Charlotte developer Brian Cillian of DHD Ventures told the Charlotte Business Journal that the project will add much-needed new apartments to Waxhaw, something the area has not seen for a decade.

The 10,000 square feet of commercial space is to include a a 6,500-square-foot restaurant space that will serve craft beer.

The 1898 mill's floors, ceilings and exposed brick walls will be left intact in the 80,000-square-foot former mill set on 7 acres.

Apartment spaces will be one- and two-bedroom units that will rent from $1,100 to nearly $1,700 a month. Those properties in the main mill building with be 2-story units.

There will be garden apartments in a mill addition built in the 1960s.

Resident amenities will include a dog park, pool and outdoor kitchens.

A grand opening for the $12.5 million project in July. The as-yet-unnamed restaurant is expected to open in June.
